The centre of Gran Canaria rises to almost 2,000 m at Pico de las Nieves, among Canary pine forests, deep ravines and villages that seem to hang from the slopes. It's the flip side of the beach island, and for many its most beautiful part. These are the interior's essentials.
Roque Nublo, the island's symbol
An 80 m basalt monolith in the very centre of the island, sacred to the ancient Canarians and the symbol of Gran Canaria. It's reached by a short, easy trail from the Tejeda road, with views that on clear days reach Tenerife's Teide.
Highland villages
- Tejeda: voted one of Spain's most beautiful villages, among almond trees and ravines.
- Artenara: the island's highest village, with cave houses and viewpoints.
- Teror: a Marian town of wooden balconies, famous for its chorizo and its basilica.
Rural culture: wineries and farms
The interior and north keep a living farming tradition: wineries to taste the island's volcanic wines and banana and coffee farms (Agaete is one of the few places in Europe where coffee is grown). A plan to round off the day with local flavour.
