Founded in 1478, Las Palmas was a port of call on the routes to the Americas — Columbus passed through here — and today it's a lively city of almost 400,000 people. It combines a colonial old town with a spectacular beach right in the centre: few capitals offer both.
Vegueta, the historic quarter
The founding district, of cobbled streets and colonial houses: the Santa Ana Cathedral, the Plaza de Santa Ana, the Casa de Colón (where the navigator is said to have stayed) and good museums. It's walkable and worth a guided tour to understand its history.

Three kilometres of golden sand in the middle of the city, protected by a natural rock bar (La Barra) that calms the waves. Perfect for swimming, snorkelling or strolling along its promenade at sunset. It's among the best urban beaches in Europe.
Charming surroundings
A short hop from the capital, the island's north hides villages with history: Arucas and its stone church, Firgas or Teror, good for rounding off the day with culture and local food.
